What the F is Metaverse?

The future is close, and if you haven't learned about metaverse yet, now is the time.

You walk into a room and anything you can imagine is there inside it. This is what the Metaverse is on the highest level, and the concept has been around for decades. However, it is only recently that the media has been talking about it nonstop, and many other companies are working on products that would bring the concept to (virtual) life.

In other words, the future is CLOSE.

What is the metaverse?

The Metaverse is essentially a replica of the physical world without many of the limitations around time and space.

Zuckerberg is particularly invested in this vision of this borderless future (the why behind the Meta name), as he stated, “A lot of Metaverse experience is going to be around being able to teleport from one experience to another.”

You may be wondering: Is there an appetite for such a world? Well, in 2007, Second Life, a web-based alternative reality, attracted more than a million people. Users built homes, went shopping for clothing, ate out at restaurants, and partied at nightclubs through their virtual avatars. The activities that took place within Second Life had real-world implications. Users spent real money to purchase items, and some built million-dollar real estate portfolios.

Now, this gives new meaning to the definition of “Virtual work” 😉

Microsoft, Nvidia, Epic Games, Roblox, and Meta have all announced an interest in building their own version of the metaverse. Epic Games has raised $1 billion for the project, and Zuckerberg announced Meta Platforms Inc. would invest at least $10 billion in the project this year alone.

With the recent launch of Horizon Workrooms, which reimagines the idea of office by designing “a virtual meeting space where you and your colleagues can work better together from anywhere,” the company is already making strides toward realizing its vision. Microsoft has hinted that it is building a similar work environment to Meta’s Horizon Workrooms.

In the late October 2021, Meta shared their own vision for the Metaverse. This video explains further in what Meta is aiming to accomplish in upcoming future years.

This is something that not all companies can start implicating into their businesses due to budgets. See what the needs and wants are and determine if Metaverse is something that will help lead your client’s business into the future growth.
